Twitter has posted a statement on its official privacy blog explaining that a security vulnerability has been discovered in the Twitter application for the Android platform. This vulnerability allows hackers to control your profile including sending tweets and direct messages, as well as accessing non-public information, and planting malicious code in restricted storage areas in the Twitter app.
Twitter says that there is no evidence to confirm that this vulnerability discovered in the Twitter application for the Android platform has been exploited to hack user accounts, but it is always preferable to take the necessary measures. Depending on the version of the Android system and the Twitter app, people who could be attacked are contacted for instructions on how to proceed via email or within the app. Upgrading to the latest version of the Twitter app is also an important step to becoming safe.
Meanwhile, Twitter stated that its iOS platform implementation is not affected by this vulnerability and that users of this app are safe.
